Kenya's Ministry of Health has been managing 199 COVID-19 patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) since the pandemic began in March.
According to Public Health Director General Patrick Amoth, as of July 14, 36 active cases are being handled by health facilities, with 18 patients on mechanical ventilatory support and 18 on oxygen support.
Amoth noted that the health ministry spends Sh71,000 per day to manage a COVID-19 patient under critical care, while mild cases cost Sh21,400 each daily.
Interestingly, Amoth observed that most COVID-19 patients in the country are asymptomatic, leading to the adoption of a home-based care program, which is nine times cheaper than institutional care.
As of July 14, Kenya had reported 10,971 COVID-19 cases, with 497 new cases announced that day. The health ministry has recorded 202 deaths, translating to a 1.87% fatality rate, and 3,017 recoveries.
