Kenya has reported a significant increase in COVID-19 deaths, with five more patients succumbing to the virus on July 14, 2020, bringing the country's death toll to 202.

This represents a case fatality rate of 1.87%, a slight decrease from the 2.5% recorded in June and 3.4% in May. The highest fatality rate was reported in April at 5.1%.

According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, 71 patients have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of patients cleared after recovering to 3,017 since April 1.

With a total of 10,791 infections reported since March 14, there are currently 7,572 patients under care at various health facilities, including those under home-based care.

Coronavirus patients in Kenya are recovering at a rate of 27.9%, which is lower than the global average of 58%.

Acting Health Director-General Dr. Patrick confirmed that 199 COVID-19 cases have undergone ICU management, including 36 active cases, with 90 patients recovering and 73 dying.

Dr. Mwangangi warned against sharing videos and pictures of COVID-19 patients, citing stigmatization and profiling as major concerns.

“Some Kenyans have resorted to stigmatizing COVID-19 patients, which is unacceptable. COVID-19 is a disease, and getting it is not a crime. We must take care of each other and avoid profiling patients, as it doesn't add value,” she added.
