On July 9, 2020, Sudan took a significant step towards resolving its long-standing conflict with rebel groups when senior Cabinet members resigned to make room for rebel leaders.

The resignation of the ministers, including Asmaa Mohamed Abdallah of Foreign Affairs and Ibrahim Al-Badawi of Finance and Economic Planning, was seen as a major concession by the Transitional Government to the Sudanese Revolutionary Front, a grouping of former fighters against ousted leader Omar al-Bashir.

Prime Minister Abdulla Hamdok had pledged to respond to a memo by the Front after the June 30 demonstrations by hundreds of marchers demanding “completion of the revolution”.

Representatives of rebel groups could now take up the ministerial posts, although it is up to the former fighters themselves to share them out.

Dr Hamdok described the ministers who resigned as having established a new tradition in public service through their dedication, sincerity, and integrity, and that their resignation was a sacrifice for the country.

The Transitional Government has committed to implementing the demands of the June 30 demonstrators into executive decisions, with Minister for Information Faisal Muhammad Saleh stating that the government would work to meet the demands.
