On July 14, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta spoke at a virtual meeting of the 36th assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Government, convened by Sudan's Prime Minister Dr Abdalla Hamdok.

President Kenyatta commended the progress achieved in the South Sudan peace process, citing the setting up of the executive arm of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) and the agreement on responsibility sharing at state level as key success indicators.

“I wish to note that in the last five months, we have witnessed a positive political momentum in the South Sudan peace process,” President Kenyatta said.

He also noted that the permanent ceasefire in South Sudan was holding, but cautioned against an increase in communal violence, which could worsen the humanitarian situation in the country.

President Kenyatta appealed to South Sudanese leaders to work towards strengthening institutions of governance to attain sustainable peace and stability.

On COVID-19, President Kenyatta commended joint response measures adopted by IGAD member states for helping slow down the spread of the virus in the region.
