On July 14, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed his appreciation for the progress made in the South Sudan peace process, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a virtual meeting of the 36th assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Government, President Kenyatta highlighted the establishment of the executive arm of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) and the agreement on responsibility sharing at state level as significant achievements.

“In the last five months, we have witnessed a positive political momentum in the South Sudan peace process. Through significant compromises made by the parties, a number of important milestones and breakthroughs have been achieved,” President Kenyatta said.

He also commended the joint response measures adopted by IGAD member states to slow down the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

President Kenyatta cautioned against an increase in communal violence, warning that it could worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

He appealed to South Sudanese leaders to work towards strengthening institutions of governance to attain sustainable peace and stability in their country.

Other Heads of State and Government who addressed the summit included Presidents Ismail Omar Guelleh (Djibouti), Mohamed Abdullahi (Somalia), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Ethiopia).
