On July 14, 2020, the Tea Bill 2018 amendments were introduced to regulate the tea sector, imposing stiff penalties on factories buying tea from unregistered growers.

The amendments, which include a Sh10 million fine, a 10-year jail term, or both for factories entertaining tea hawking, aim to curb the rampant theft of crops in farms and sharp price variations.

According to the amendments, factories can easily suffocate the illegal market by only accepting tea from registered sources, helping genuine farmers get a fair reward for their hard work.

Many people depend on the tea crop, and the State must effectively regulate to help farmers get a fair reward for their hard work.
