On July 9, 2020, Bishop Francis Mugweru, a 62-year-old cleric from Joy Springs Soul-winning Worship Centre in Juja, Kiambu County, was brutally murdered by unknown individuals.

According to reports, the bishop had separated from his wife, Agnes Wangivi, in 2013 and was in the process of formalizing his union with Leah Wambui, the wife of one of his childhood friends, John Kanyua.

Samuel Njuguna, the brother of the deceased, called on the police to bring the culprits to book, stating, "We want justice for our slain brother, father, and spiritual leader. Police should leave no stone unturned until they apprehend those behind his death."

The bishop's body was found about 300 meters from his Kiganjo home in Thika sub-county on July 10, 2020, with deep cuts and injuries indicating he was hit with a blunt object.

Francis Mugweru's love triangle with Leah Wambui had been making headlines in August 2019, with the bishop stating, "I am not ready for any reconciliation with my former wife. My decision to ditch her was final and I am forging forward with my preparations to formalise my new marriage."

His death has sparked concerns about the increasing cases of men of God preying on women in church instead of praying for them.
