As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Italy's early response serves as a cautionary tale. In March, we spoke to a doctor in Italy who was triaging patients north of Milan, warning of a potential pandemic in the United States. Today, we revisit that conversation to see how Italy's cautious approach to reopening public spaces has paid off.
Italy was one of the first countries in Europe to institute a nationwide lockdown, and later, to choose a cautious approach to reopening public spaces. This approach has been compared to other countries' responses to the pandemic, with varying degrees of success.
Our conversation with the doctor in Italy provides a unique perspective on the pandemic's early days and the lessons that can be learned from Italy's response. We also explore the implications of Italy's approach for other countries, including the United States, which is currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases.
