COVID-19 Pandemic Worsening: WHO Warns of Consequences of Ignoring Precautions

On July 14, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning that the COVID-19 pandemic will worsen if countries continue to disregard containment measures.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the pandemic will get worse and worse if precautions are not followed. He emphasized that the virus is still a huge enemy in the world, with over 13 million infections and more than half a million deaths.

According to Tedros, out of the 230,000 cases recorded on July 12, 10% were from 10 countries and 80% from two countries. He urged nations to follow basic precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.

WHO emergencies head Mike Ryan echoed Tedros' sentiments and warned against reopening education institutions. Ryan stated that schools could safely resume once the virus was defeated.

The WHO's warning came days after revealing that there was emerging evidence showing that the coronavirus was airborne. A team of 239 scientists from 32 countries had been studying the virus and brought this evidence to the attention of the WHO.
