UK Opens Doors to Highly Skilled Kenyan Professionals

As part of its post-Brexit arrangement, the UK has introduced a new immigration system that allows highly skilled Kenyan professionals to compete for jobs in the UK without requiring a university degree.

According to the UK Home Office, the new system will take effect from 1 January 2021, once freedom of movement with the European Union (EU) has ended.

Under the new system, applicants must earn 50 points from three areas: having a job offer from a licensed sponsor, speaking English to an acceptable standard, and ensuring their job offer is at A-level equivalent.

A licensed job sponsor is an employer approved by the Home Office with the ability to pay a bare minimum of KSh 2,496,732.

Applicants will also need to gain at least 70 points under a system designed to assess their skills and salary.

The UK will consider job shortage in the identified fields as well as whether or not the applicant is a new entrant to the labour market.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have shared a moment in the past, with the UK opening its borders under the new immigration system.
