As the fight against Covid-19 continues to ravage the country, concerns over the safety of frontline workers have been raised in Mombasa County.

According to Mombasa county Health County Executive Committee (CEC) member Hazel Koitaba, 45 health workers have tested positive for the virus since March 2020.

Of the total, 35 cases were reported from private hospitals within the county, sparking questions about the preparedness of these facilities to handle the pandemic.

“Out of the 45 health workers who tested positive, about 10 percent of them came from private health practitioners,” Koitaba said during a visit to the Coast General and Referral Hospital, where she received locally manufactured personal protective equipment from the Kenya Covid-19 Fund and Equity Group Foundation.

More than 1,250 health workers in Mombasa have been tested for Covid-19, with the county government taking steps to ensure the safety of its healthcare workers.
