On July 14, 2020, the Nairobi Securities Exchange was at the center of a Sh2.1 million scam, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched an investigation into a businessman who conned a trader.

According to the DCI, the businessman, Brian Mutinda Kimeu, had promised the trader, Geoffrey Njau Mwaura, that he would purchase shares for him at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

However, after receiving Sh2.1 million from Mwaura in October last year, Kimeu allegedly went underground and switched off his phone.

Corporal Jackson Mbitu of the Kasarani DCI offices obtained orders from the Makadara Law Courts to receive copies of Kimeu's bank statements for the period between October 15 and November 30, 2019.
