On July 14, 2020, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was granted permission to charge Omar Lali with the murder of Tecra Muigai, the daughter of Kercohe Breweries owners, in a Nairobi court.

The DPP applied for Omar's detention, stating that detectives had gathered sufficient evidence to charge him with Tecra's murder, which allegedly occurred on May 3.

According to the prosecution, Omar pushed Tecra off the stairs after a heated argument in their luxurious apartment in Lamu.

State counsel Eddie Kadebe and Zakaria Kiongo said there was enough evidence to convict Omar, citing toxicological evidence, postmortem reports, phone records, and witness statements.

Senior Resident Magistrate Temba Sitati directed that Omar be arraigned before the High Court in Garsen within 24 hours to take plea for the murder of his girlfriend, failure to which he be granted police bond.
