On July 14, 2020, Safaricom, Kenya's largest telecommunications company, announced a partnership with Aviat Networks to facilitate the rollout of 5G backhaul networks in rural areas.
The partnership will enable Safaricom to extend its 5G network to remote locations in Kenya where laying fiber and copper cables is not feasible.
Aviat Networks will provide Safaricom with the necessary spectrum equipment, which includes the WTM 4800 multi-band radio platform. This equipment uses narrow beams to deliver speeds of up to 10 Gbps over long distances.
According to Aviat, the WTM 4800 multi-band network deployment is the industry's only cloud-based multi-band link design solution, allowing microwave planners to visualize the combined availability and capacity of the entire multi-band link.
Aviat's CEO, Pete Smith, stated,
