Kenya's 47 counties have amassed assets worth over Ksh 110 billion, a report by the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) has revealed. The report, published on July 13, 2020, also highlighted that the counties have liabilities running to Ksh 57 billion.
According to the report, the committee had used Ksh 400 million to identify the assets, which was a significant reduction from the Ksh 4 billion budget projected by the defunct Transition Authority (TA).
CS for Devolution Eugene Wamalwa commended the outgoing team for a job well done in identifying the assets, which included 62,342 parcels of land, over 70,000 buildings, and 2,600 cars owned by defunct councils.
Wamalwa expressed concern over the increase in inter-governmental disputes and called for sobriety in the Senate's debate and resolution of the current revenue allocation impasse.
Outgoing vice-chairperson Allyce Kureiya noted that the biggest challenge faced by the outgoing team was interference from other bodies, and she hoped that the new team would receive full support from the State.
New acting chairman John Burugu expressed optimism that the new team would deliver after their term tenure was confirmed to six years.
