On July 13, 2020, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua took swift action to address concerns over air pollution in the county, ordering the closure of Endmor Steel Mills in Syokimau.

The decision came after a Citizen TV expose by Enock Sikolia highlighted the company's alleged emissions, which had been causing air pollution in the area.

According to a statement signed by Governor Mutua, the closure was ordered to safeguard the lives of residents whose respiratory systems were being affected by the pollution, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the recommendations set by the Machakos County Government to the company include adopting clean production processes and ensuring occupational health and safety standards are followed.
