On July 13, 2020, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua took swift action to address pollution concerns in Syokimau estate, ordering Edmor Steel Mills to shut down.
The move was prompted by an outcry from residents who have been experiencing respiratory ailments associated with air pollution emanating from the factory.
Dr. Mutua emphasized the need to safeguard the lives of locals, stating that the factory would remain shut until air pollution was stopped and clean production procedures were adhered to.
He also directed the company to provide adequate sanitation and handwashing facilities and adhere to Covid-19 public health regulations.
Earlier, the governor received personal protective equipment (PPEs) worth Sh3.8 million from the Equity Group Foundation, which was presented by Dr. James Mwangi at a brief ceremony held at Machakos Level V Hospital.
