On July 13, 2020, a tragic incident unfolded in Nyangati village, Kirinyaga County, when a miraa vehicle heading to Nairobi from Meru collided with a boda boda rider on the Embu/Mwea Road, resulting in the rider's death.
Enraged residents confronted the driver, beating him up in protest. However, police arrived at the scene, and as they attempted to rescue the driver, the mob turned on them.
The residents, armed with sticks and whips, seriously injured the two police officers. The victims were rushed to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
It took the intervention of a contingent of police to save their colleagues and rescue them from the wrath of the attackers. One resident was arrested and taken to Wang'uru police station.
Mwea East Deputy police boss, Mr. Luka Chebet, condemned the attacks, stating that all those responsible would be pursued, arrested, and prosecuted.
