On July 13, 2020, Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua suspended the business license of Endmor Steel Millers following a Citizen TV exposé on pollution affecting Syokimau residents.

The move comes after Citizen TV aired an exposé on the plight of Syokimau residents, highlighting the severe impact of pollution on their health.

“…to safeguard the lives of our people whose respiratory systems are being affected by the pollution, even rendering them in more danger during this difficult time of COVID-19, Machakos County Government has suspended the business license of the said company until measures in the attached report are dealt with,” Governor Mutua said in a statement.

According to the Governor, Endmor Steel Millers must adhere to set guidelines for clean production processes, occupational health and safety standards, and air quality standards.

The factory will also be required to provide adequate sanitation and hand washing facilities, as well as standard KN 95 masks to all workers, in line with the Ministry of Health's guidelines for social distancing, face masks, hand washing, and daily temperature recording.
