On July 13, 2020, a Kenya Army helicopter crashed in the Kithyoko area of Kitui County, leaving two pilots on board.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the incident in a statement, stating that the helicopter, a Hughes 500MD, crashed during a training flight.

The pilots were evacuated from the crash site, and the helicopter's wreckage was left behind.

The helicopter's specifications included a type of MD 500E, registration number Army 539, and serial number 0464E.
