Machakos residents in Syokimau estate, Mavoko Sub County, have finally breathed a sigh of relief after Governor Alfred Mutua ordered the closure of Edmor Steel Mills on July 13, 2020.

The decision was made in response to growing concerns over air pollution emanating from the factory, which has been linked to respiratory ailments among residents.

According to Governor Mutua, the factory will remain closed until an audit is conducted to assess its compliance with set regulations and occupational health and safety standards by the National Environment Management Authority.

Additionally, the Governor directed the company to provide adequate sanitation and hand washing facilities and adhere to COVID-19 public health regulations, including social distancing, use of face masks, hand washing, and daily temperature recording for all workers and visitors.
