July 13, 2020 - In a significant development in the Tecra Muigai murder case, a Lamu Magistrate Court has allowed the public prosecutor to charge Omar Lali with the crime.
Lamu Principal Magistrate Allan Temba delivered the ruling virtually, permitting the Director of the Public Prosecution to press murder charges against Lali.
Temba ordered Lali, 54, who has been out on a Sh300,000 bond, to be presented before the Garsen High Court within 24 hours to take the murder plea.
He will be charged with the felony of murder of Tecra, who was his girlfriend, contrary to section 203 of the Penal Code.
Senior Counsel James Orengo, representing Tecra's family and Keroche Breweries owners, expressed satisfaction with the decision, saying justice will be served as per the law.
However, Lali's lawyer, Aboubakar Yusuf, stated that while he could not contest the decision to charge his client, he will prove his client's innocence once charged with the felony.
Tecra died on May 2 after sustaining head and face injuries from a fall down a staircase flight in Lali's house while on holiday in Lamu on April 27.
