On May 16, 2020, Tecra Muigai, the Strategy and Innovation Director at Keroche Breweries, tragically died after sustaining injuries on the left side of her head. An autopsy report revealed that the injuries were consistent with a fall down the stairs.

However, homicide detectives have been probing claims that Omar Lali, Tecra's 54-year-old boyfriend, may have pushed her to her death. Omar has maintained his innocence, stating that he loved Tecra and there was no way he could have hurt her.

After Tecra's death, Omar was detained for 21 days to enable police to complete investigations. He was later freed after the court declined an application by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have him detained for one more week.

On July 13, 2020, Lamu law courts principal magistrate Allan Temba made a ruling via a video link, stating that there was substantive evidence that the death of the late Tecra was not accidental. Omar will now face a murder charge in a Lamu court.
