On July 13, 2020, Madagascar's government placed its capital, Antananarivo, under a strict lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the World Health Organization, there are 4,578 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the island, with 34 deaths since the virus was first detected in March.
Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina announced that two members of parliament had died from the virus, and that 11 other deputies and 14 senators had also tested positive.
