On July 13, 2020, a Lamu court charged Omar Lali with the murder of Tecra Muigai, the late Keroche breweries heiress.

Just hours before the court proceedings, one of Omar's supporters, Mohammed Shaib, tweeted a photo of Omar leaving court, stating,

"Just came out from the court!!! Now they are saying they have enough evidence to charge Omar Lali for Murder!! Will be taking plea at Garsen High Court tomorrow. #Mungutuu #FreeOmar."

On May 4, the court had granted police 21 days to detain Lali at the Lamu police station to allow for comprehensive investigations into Tecra's death following his arrest on May 3.

Tecra was pronounced dead at a Nairobi hospital on May 3, a day after a mysterious accident in Lamu. She had been airlifted to the hospital after the incident.

At the time of her death, Tecra was living with Lali in a rented cottage in Shella town, Lamu.

According to Lali, Tecra had fallen down a flight of stairs and hurt her head. However, an autopsy conducted by chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that Tecra died as a result of trauma to the left side of her head consistent with a fall.
