Published on July 13, 2020, a survey by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) has shed light on the willingness of residents in Nairobi's informal settlements to undergo COVID-19 testing.
According to the survey, a staggering 90% of residents expressed openness to COVID-19 tests, with a significant majority being male (92%) and female (89%). The age distribution also showed a notable trend, with 90% of those aged 18-34 years and 91% of those above 35 years willing to get tested.
However, the survey also highlighted the reasons behind the 10% of residents who expressed unwillingness to be tested. A significant 45% cited fear of the testing procedure as the primary reason, while 15% mentioned social stigma, 11% fear of being forcibly quarantined, and 4% the cost of medical expenses.
The TIFA survey was conducted between June 2 and 15 in Nairobi's low-income areas, including Huruma, Kibera, Mathare, Korogocho, Kukuru kwa Njenga, and Kawangware.
