Kenya Airways has announced the resumption of domestic flights, following the lifting of the cessation of movement order by President Kenyatta to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the airline's schedule, flights will operate twice daily to Mombasa and once daily to Kisumu, with the option to increase frequencies as demand picks up.
The resumption of domestic flights is aimed at reviving the Kenyan economy by boosting tourism, ahead of the resumption of international flights on August 1, 2020.
While the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has exempted domestic flights from leaving the middle seat open, Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka emphasized the airline's commitment to the health and safety of passengers, crew, and staff.
'I want to thank our customers for trusting us to get them to their destinations safely,' Kilavuka said. 'We look forward to welcoming more of our guests onboard and remain committed to offering world-class service with a delightful African touch.'
Kenya Airports Authority has also put in place health and safety protocols, which will be evaluated and updated as necessary, according to Ag. Managing Director Alex Gitari.
The resumption of domestic flights is expected to add to the revival of domestic tourism, which has recorded an all-time low, according to Betty Radier, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board.
