On July 12, 2020, police in Nakuru were forced to break into a house to free a mother and her 18-month-old sick baby after the landlord ordered the agent to weld the steel door due to Sh10,000 rent arrears.
The mother, a businesswoman who had lived in the house for six years, had lost her job due to the coronavirus and was struggling to pay her rent. Her business, which relied on students, had suffered significantly since the university was shut down.
According to the mother, she had tried to sell her couch to settle the debt but was unable to find a buyer. Her four other children were accommodated by neighbours who pleaded with the agent to release her and the baby.
Police were forced to break the window to rescue the mother and her baby. The landlord and agent will face stern action, according to Njoro OCPD Mohammed Huka.
