As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, the Kenyan government has urged citizens to exercise caution when traveling.

On July 13, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe made a plea for Kenyans to only engage in necessary travel during his daily press briefing.

“Travel poses risks. Observe caution just like some churches have been allowed to operate but they prefer to close to exercise caution,” Kagwe said.

His appeal comes after the Bomet County government reported a case of a person who had been discharged from hospital after being infected with COVID-19, and had traveled in a public service vehicle with seven other passengers.

“We are making an appeal to the passengers who travelled to get in touch with our officers from the Health Department. You will be given instructions on what to do so that all of us are safe,” explained Bomet Governor Hillary Barchock.

With the lifting of cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi and Mombasa, travel is expected to increase in the coming days. The daily SGR train services between Nairobi and Mombasa commenced on July 13, 2020, while buses are expected to hit the road on July 15, 2020. Domestic flights will also commence operations this week, with international travel slated for August 1, 2020.
