Published on July 12, 2020, Mali was on the brink of chaos as President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita struggled to contain the worst civil unrest the country had seen in decades.
Keita's promise to form a national unity government, which the country has been without since elections earlier this year, was met with skepticism by many.
The president's decision to dissolve the constitutional court, which had faced controversy since it overturned provisional results from parliamentary elections in March, was seen as a desperate attempt to quell the unrest.
However, experts warn that the situation in Mali is precarious and that turmoil could spiral out of control at any moment.
Adrian Finighan, presenter of the discussion, was joined by Fatima Al Ansar, special adviser to the Malian minister of foreign affairs, Noufal Abboud, director of The Nordic Center for Conflict Transformation, and William Lawrence, former US diplomat in West Africa.
They shared their insights on the situation in Mali and the potential consequences of the unrest.
