On July 12, 2020, a tragic incident shook Kaumoni village in Matungulu, Machakos County, when the bodies of two lovers were found hanging side by side in their bedroom.
The victims, 28-year-old Dennis Pius and his 19-year-old lover Susan Ndeto, had eloped from Nairobi's Kayole estate just days before their bodies were discovered.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had been living together in Nairobi and had arrived at their rural home on Friday after travel restrictions from the capital were lifted by the President.
Susan's mother had been warning her against the relationship with the much older man, but the teenager had chosen to ignore her advice.
On Sunday morning, July 12, Susan's mother began a frantic search for her daughter after several calls went unanswered. She eventually travelled from Nairobi to the village, where her worst fears were confirmed when she found the two bodies hanging from the roof of their house.
The motive for the suspected suicide is still unknown, but the incident has sent shockwaves through the community.
The two bodies were taken to Kangundo Level IV Hospital mortuary as investigations commence.
