Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu's fate hangs in the balance as an impeachment motion against her gains momentum. The motion, tabled by the house majority leader and member of the County Assembly for Athi ward, Mr. Peter Kilonzo, is set to be considered by the County Assembly of Kitui between July 15th and 17th, 2020.

The impeachment motion, which was informed to the Governor in a letter dated June 23rd, 2020, is a result of allegations that Ngilu has been flouting the two-thirds gender rule in most appointments she has made in the recent past. The Governor is also accused of snubbing audit queries and ignoring summons from the MCAs.

Ngilu's impeachment was previously halted by the High court, but the summons were not officially withdrawn by the speaker. In response, the Governor dispatched her legal team to protest alleged bias by the house speaker. However, her lawyers were roughed up by orderlies on June 29th, 2020, with one of them, Morris Kimuli, left nursing back injuries.
