On a day of protests and solidarity, Lewis Hamilton delivered a dominant performance to secure his first win of the season and the 85th of his career in the Styrian Grand Prix, held on July 12 at the Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg, Austria.
Hamilton bounced back from a disappointing display in the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix a week earlier with a consummate display, taking the chequered flag with a 13.7-second margin over his teammate Valtteri Bottas, who finished second.
Mercedes secured their first one-two finish in Austria since 2015, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing taking third place.
Hamilton's win was a significant moment in the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement, as he led a number of drivers in taking a knee in support of the cause before the race.
"It's great to be back up here and thanks to the team," Hamilton said in the post-race interview.
"This feels like it has been a long time coming after a difficult weekend last time," he added.
Bottas, who started fourth, said he had enjoyed his battle with Verstappen, but admitted that Mercedes were just a bit too slow.
Verstappen, who was slowed by slight car damage in the final stages, said he had tried his best but ultimately fell short.
The Styrian Grand Prix was a thrilling event, with a number of drivers delivering impressive performances. Lando Norris of McLaren came home fifth after passing both Racing Point cars on the final lap, while Sergio Perez took sixth after starting from 17th on the grid.
Other notable finishers included Daniel Ricciardo of Renault, who took eighth place, and Carlos Sainz, who clocked the fastest lap and finished ninth in the second McLaren.
