COVID-19 Cases Rise in Kenya as Ministry Reports 379 New Infections

On July 12, 2020, the Ministry of Health in Kenya reported 379 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections to 10,105 since March.

According to Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, the new cases were diagnosed from 7,050 samples analyzed within a 24-hour period.

The COVID-19 death toll rose to 185 after one more patient succumbed to the disease, resulting in a case fatality rate of 1.8 percent.

This represents a drop from the 1.89 percent reported on Friday and 2 percent recorded in the beginning of the month, 2.5 percent in June, 3.4 percent in May, and 5.1 percent recorded in April.

"I send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the bereaved," Kagwe said in an emailed statement.

The new cases include a two-year-old child and a 97-year-old, with 253 males and 126 females affected.

Nairobi accounted for 209 of the new cases, while Kiambu reported 49. Other counties with new cases include Busia, Migori, Mombasa, Kajiado, Uasin Gishu, Lamu, Machakos, Nakuru, Narok, Wajir, Kisumu, Garissa, Isiolo, Kericho, Nyamira, Nyeri, and Trans Nzoia.

Kagwe also reported the recovery of 49 more patients, raising the total recovery toll to 2,881.

Of the new cases in Nairobi, the cases are spread across various sub-counties, including Kibra, Lang'ata, Kamukunji, Dagoretti North, Makadara, Embakasi Central, Embakasi East, Westlands, Dagoretti South, Embakasi West, Kasarani, Roysambu, Ruaraka, Embakasi South, Mathare, and Starehe.
