On July 12, 2020, detectives raided the offices and home of Rigathi Gachagua, a close confidant of Deputy President William Ruto and the Mathira Member of Parliament, recovering millions in the process.
Gachagua addressed the press over the weekend, dismissing claims that he had been involved in questionable dealings in which he acquired Ksh 5.8 billion from various state agencies, counties, and his own Mathira constituency.
He also denied claims that a raid took place at his home, stating, “I slept in my home…the media is pushing narratives that are nonsensical.”
Gachagua insisted that he is an innocent man and will be vindicated in the fullness of time, adding, “I have not taken anything from anybody and should anyone have any evidence, to table it before the court.”
According to the Assets and Recovery Agency, Gachagua was involved in a money laundering scheme, receiving huge sums of money as proceeds of the crime.
The EACC conducted investigations and established that the lawmaker had received more than Ksh 5.8 billion in cash, and moved in to freeze over Ksh 200 million in his account.
