On July 12, 2020, The New York Times Magazine embarked on a unique project in response to the coronavirus pandemic. They asked 29 authors to write new short stories inspired by the moment and by Giovanni Boccaccio's 'The Decameron', which was written as a plague ravaged Florence in the 14th century.

The project, dubbed 'The Decameron Project', aimed to create a modern retelling of the classic tale. Two of the selected stories, written by Tommy Orange and Edwidge Danticat, were recorded by Audm and are available to listen to today.

These stories offer a glimpse into the human experience during the pandemic and serve as a reminder of the power of storytelling. To hear more audio stories from publishers like The New York Times, download Audm for iPhone or Android.

The Daily is a production of The New York Times, featuring a team of talented producers and editors. Our theme music is by Jim Brunberg and Ben Landsverk of Wonderly.
