On July 11, 2020, a police officer in Kibokoni, Mombasa County, was attacked by members of the public for enforcing COVID-19 containment measures.

The officer, who sustained serious injuries, was hospitalised at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori, the incident is an act of lawlessness that could foster anarchy and undermine the rule of law.

'IPOA has clear mechanisms for receiving and investigating complaints and urges members of the public not to take the law into their hands but to lodge complaints with the Authority at no cost by dialing 1559,' Makori said in a statement.

The incident is the latest in a series of cases of police brutality and killings that have damaged the image of the police service.

Between March and June 2020, several cases of police brutality and killings were reported, including the death of 13-year-old Yassin Moyo, who was shot by a police officer while watching the enforcement of a curfew.
