On July 12, 2020, a passenger who had travelled from Nairobi to Bomet, despite being unwell, boarded a South Rift Matatu Sacco. The individual was later picked up by the Bomet County Emergency Response team and tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Bomet County Governor Hillary Barchok, contact tracing is ongoing to identify the eight people who were aboard the Matatu for testing.
The Governor urged the Matatu sector to adhere to health guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially now that the lockdown has been lifted and many people are leaving Nairobi, a hotspot for the virus.
Bomet County has so far recorded 13 cases of COVID-19, and there are fears that the lifting of the Nairobi lockdown will trigger a mass exodus, further spreading the virus.
