Published on July 12, 2020, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has acknowledged the crucial role forest resources play in the county's economy and environment, and is seeking a partnership with the Kenya Forest Services (KFS) to protect the region from the effects of floods.
During a meeting with Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. Julius Kamau, Governor Kinyanjui noted that the county intends to work together with KFS to rehabilitate and restore the Menengai forest to avoid floods flowing down to the town in the near future.
The governor emphasized the importance of forest conservation in the county, citing the recent floods that have been experienced in the area. He also highlighted the need to involve members of the public in the conservation efforts through Community Forest Associations (CFAs).
Mr. Kamau welcomed the partnership and highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation plan to secure, conserve, and restore Menengai Forest as a pristine urban forest for its vital recreational and ecological roles.
The meeting identified Nakuru County as a tourism hub and emphasized the need to protect forest resources as the water catchment areas driving Nakuru's economy.
Through this partnership, the CCF aims to develop sustainable programs revolving around eco-tourism and recreation of the Menengai forest, which will preserve the historic role of the ecosystem and create investment opportunities for communities and regional economies.
