Published on July 12, 2020, the National Development Implementation Technical Committee (NDITC) has recommended that the Treasury release funds for the completion of Phase One of the Galana-Kulalu food security project before handing it over to the private sector.
The project, which has already utilized 5,200 acres, has impressed the committee, led by chairman Karanja Kibicho. Speaking in Kilifi, Kibicho praised the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) for demonstrating the viability of the project, despite not being its core mandate.
“We are aware that the core mandate of NIA is not to practice agriculture. They have just taken effort to demonstrate, using this farm, that this is a viable project. They have even been able to calculate the cost of production and the expected outcome,” Kibicho said.
The project was taken over by NIA from Green Arava, an Israeli contractor, following contractual disagreements. Kibicho declined to discuss the details of the termination, stating that the matter would be left to the State Department of Water.
