Kenya's High Commissioner to UK Lands Commonwealth Job

On July 10, 2020, Kenya's High Commissioner to the UK, Manoah Esipisu, was appointed chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors at the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Esipisu, who served as Kenya's State House spokesperson until March 2019, will succeed Bahamas High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland Ellison Greenslade in the position.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is an intergovernmental organisation that supports member countries to achieve the Commonwealth's aims of development, democracy, and peace.

Esipisu's appointment comes at a time when Kenya is pushing to have Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed fill up the position of World Trade Organisation director-general.

Kenya's bid to secure the WTO position is set to face stiff competition from five other nominees, including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, Jesús Seade Kuri of Mexico, Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh of Egypt, Tudor Ulianovschi of Moldova, and Yoo Myung-hee of Korea.

Esipisu's two-year appointment as chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors at the Commonwealth Secretariat is a significant milestone for Kenya's diplomatic efforts.
