On June 26, 2020, the Tourism Fund received a resignation letter from Chief Executive Officer Joseph Cherutoi, giving three months' notice. This move has sparked concerns about tribalism in President Kenyatta's administration, with some questioning why a majority of qualified individuals from a specific region are being appointed to head state corporations and hold plum state positions.
David Mwangi has taken over as Acting CEO of the Tourism Fund, replacing Joseph Cherutoi who resigned recently. Cherutoi joined the Fund in 2014 as the Head of Finance before being named acting CEO.
The Fund was established under the Tourism Act, 2011, and is mandated to mobilize resources to finance the development of the tourism industry in Kenya. The Fund's Chair, Alfonse Kioko, has announced that a meeting will be held to discuss the way forward for the organization.
Chief Executive Joseph Cherutoi and the Director of Corporate Services Eric Kiplagat tendered their resignation letters and gave a 3 months' notice set to lapse end of September. The Fund's Chair, Alfonse Kioko, is expected to announce the Fund's acting Chief Executive Officer, pending substantive appointment.
