On July 11, 2020, University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama addressed the institution's staff and students via a live briefing on the university's website, revealing that two staff members had fallen to Covid-19.
"University of Nairobi has also not been spared by this enemy, the Covid-19," Prof. Kiama said, emphasizing the reality of the pandemic's impact.
According to Prof. Kiama, the two staff members died the previous week, with experts predicting a possible rise in mortalities that may slow down around November.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Prof. Kiama assured that the university is prepared to continue learning uninterrupted, providing students with e-learning materials and ensuring that the graduation schedule remains on track.
"This intervention brought life back to the university, as faculty and students began to engage. As we were gaining momentum, the challenge of cost of data emerged and threatened to roll back our gains," Kiama said.
Prof. Kiama also announced that the university will reopen in a phased manner, in line with the government's directive on curbing the spread of the virus, and that the institution will communicate the dates for the admission of new students shortly.
