Kenya's COVID-19 Count Hits 9,726 as 278 Test Positive ¶
On Saturday, July 11, 2020, Kenya's COVID-19 count hit 9,726 after 278 new cases were confirmed. The new cases were announced by Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi during a press briefing at Kwale county.
According to Mwangangi, the new cases were distributed in various counties, including Nairobi (162), Kajiado (40), Kiambu (28), Machakos (22), Nakuru (16), Siaya and Mombasa (two), Murang’a, Nyamira, Meru, Homa Bay, Nyandarua, and Uasin-Gishu, each with one case.
Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi emphasized that the responsibility to comply with containment measures fully lies with individuals, given that the government had lifted several restrictions meant to curb the spread of the virus last week.
"We are dealing with an enemy that requires simple ammunition. We are appealing to the public to continue observing the measures set by the Ministry of Health. Now that we have lifted restrictions, people need to take care of themselves and shouldn't be complacent," Mwangangi said.
Close to 10,000 Kenyans have contracted COVID-19 since the first case was confirmed in March. Following the death of Doreen Lugaliki, the first doctor to succumb to COVID-19 in the country on Friday, July 10, the health department said it would ensure frontline health workers were well protected.
"The risk is high and most of our health workers are exposed including in the community. We are giving them PPE and psychosocial support to ensure their safety," Health DG Patrick Amoth said.
On Friday, July 10, Kenya recorded its first COVID-19-related death, with the passing of Dr. Doreen Lugaliki. The health department has since assured that frontline health workers will be protected.
