Four Events Celebrate Culture and Creativity Amidst Pandemic ¶
July 1, 2020, marked International Reggae Day, a 24-hour celebration of reggae culture and its influence. The event, hosted in Kingston, Jamaica, featured a 24-hour media festival on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Reggae music has the power to unite, and the event aimed to celebrate the best Jamaican creativity and its impact on the world. The late legendary reggae superstar Bob Marley was the face of the event, with a new music video released for the international classic 'No Woman No Cry.'
Artistes such as Fat Joe and Buju Banton came together to celebrate the event with DJ Shug and DJ Khalid mixing their favourite reggae tunes live. The highlight of the event was the children of Bob Marley, who provided a show for their fans.
Meanwhile, in Kenya, the fashion industry celebrated its annual tradition with the first-ever virtual fashion show, hosted by Jeffrey Wilson (JW). The show, held at After 40 Hotel, brought together some of the fashion industry's best designers, including suit guru Ashok Sunny.
Jeffrey Wilson revealed that the show was mainly meant to create Covid-19 themed outfits, encouraging personnel in the fashion industry to continue being creative amidst the pandemic.
Elsewhere, the Essence Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary, majorly aiming towards celebrating black culture, fashion, food, and music. Sauti Sol gave an outstanding performance, with the inspiring song 'Brighter Days.'
Lastly, Alternate Sounds, a famous band, took Kenyans by surprise with their outstanding Gengetone Sessions live performance. The band focused on a Gengetone playlist during their performance, featuring songs such as 'Mi Siwezi' by Kahush and 'Mare Mare' from Matata.
