On July 11, 2020, the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund Board made a significant donation to support the fight against COVID-19 in the coastal region of Kenya.

The Board donated 80,000 reusable face masks, which were handed over to the Coast Regional Commissioner, John Elungata, at the Uhuru na Kazi building.

According to Elungata, the masks will be distributed free of charge to residents in informal settlements, people at market places, and commuters at the Likoni ferry.

The distribution will cover the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale, and Lamu.

Elungata emphasized the importance of wearing face masks in public places, stating that security agencies will continue to enforce the mandatory wearing of face masks to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

He also announced that the government will intensify awareness campaigns on the need for people to adhere to directives on handwashing, social distancing, and wearing face masks in support of efforts to stop the spread of the disease.

Dr. James Mwangi, a member of the COVID-19 Board and CEO of Equity Bank, stated that the Board has made the donations to send a clear message to Kenyans that wearing a face mask will help protect one from contracting the respiratory disease.
