On Friday evening, a police officer in Mombasa's old town narrowly escaped death after being attacked by an irate mob.
According to reports, the officer had attempted to arrest several individuals who were not wearing face masks, sparking the violent reaction.
Witnesses claim that the officer was in plain clothes, leading locals to assume he was a civilian trying to solicit bribes.
Photos from the scene showed the officer lying in a pool of blood outside a local shop, with his clothes muddied and bloody.
He has since been identified as Gerald Sumba, a 31-year-old police officer attached to the Tononoka police station and working at the Coast General Hospital.
Police officers from Stapol central visited the scene and confirmed the officer's identity, and he has been rushed to the Coast General Hospital for treatment.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police are also pursuing another individual who was with the officer during the incident.
