On July 11, 2020, the Jamia Mosque committee announced that it would not be opening its doors to Muslim faithful on July 14 as proposed by the Inter-Faith Council.

The decision was made after widespread consultation with Muslim members of the Inter-Faith Council and the mosque's Da'wah committee members.

According to the Jamia Mosque committee, the guidelines limiting prayers to only 100 persons per session are not practical for the mosque, given its centrality in Nairobi's central business district.

The Inter-Faith Council, formed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, had issued guidelines to advise on the reopening of places of worship without triggering a surge in Covid-19 infections.

The guidelines included restrictions such as limiting worship sessions to 100 participants or worshippers, not exceeding an hour, and excluding persons under 13 years and those above 58 years from congregants.
