On Friday, a devastating road accident claimed the lives of five people on the Kitui-Machakos road, in a tragic incident that has left many shaken.
The accident involved two 14-seater matatus and a lorry at Kingaatuani, with reports indicating that a lorry collided head-on with a matatu, causing a chain reaction that led to further casualties.
According to Machakos County Government Emergency Services Director David Mwongela, the collision was followed by another matatu crashing into the wreckage of the 14-seater matatu, resulting in more fatalities.
Three passengers perished on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical attention at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
Thirteen other passengers who sustained serious injuries are currently recuperating at the same hospital.
The deceased were transferred to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital Mortuary, while the vehicles were towed to Masii police station for further investigation.
