Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo's hopes for a strong finish at the Styrian Grand Prix took a devastating hit on Friday when he crashed heavily during the second free practice session.

The 30-year-old Australian lost control of his car at Turn Nine, sending it careening into the barriers and causing significant damage to the rear of the vehicle.

Despite the severity of the crash, Ricciardo managed to extricate himself from the cockpit and walked out of the gravel trap, albeit limping heavily.

He reassured his team via radio that he was okay, but the session was immediately red-flagged to prevent any further incidents.

As the medical car arrived to collect him, Ricciardo was taken to the circuit medical centre for further evaluation.
